“65” is a 2023 American produced action thriller which intermingles the elements of science fiction directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Woods and Scott Beck previously collaborated to create the famous movie “A Quiet Place”. In the movie, Adam Driver portrays the character of Mills, an aviator from the planet Somaris who flies with Ariana Greenblatt who stars as Koa, a girl who needs Mills’ protection. In the movie, the main character is put in a position where he is required to battle dangerous beings after crash landing on what appears to be a primitive version of Earth.
Synopsis:
The main character, Mills, an astronaut hailing from Somaris goes on a two year voyage to earn money to help his daughter Nevine who is ill. The plot then tends to shift when his spacecraft crashes onto an undiscovered planet due to space rocks. Things take a rather interesting turn when it is revealed that Mills accidently traveled back in time to the earth 65 million years ago. To make matters worse during the crash he also lost his ship which he needed in order to escape. To add to the catastrophic events he encounters Koa a young girl who spoke a completely different tongue. Together they are tasked with an immense challenge in which they are puzzled to escape before an impending cosmic calamity wipes out all life on the planet.
Cast:
Adam Driver portraying Mills is known for his candid need to provide for his family while working as a professional pilot. The job exposes Mills to a inhostile environment which requires sheer resilience to tackle.
Ariana Greenblatt plays Koa: A determined and inventive girl who meets Mills and gradually starts learning his language.
Chloe Coleman portrays Nevine: The daughter of Mills who gets sick and acts as the reason why Mills gears up for action.
Nika King plays the role of a Mills’ wife who indicates his home and household ties.

“65” formally considers the problem of the struggle for survival and the issue of communication as a primitive urge to protect and care for one’s kin. Directorial Style and Camera Work:
Scott Beck together with Bryan Woods places viewers in an anxious tension-filled drama from start to end by effectively employing the action in these horror films unlike the traditional action horror that focus solely on shock value whilst capturing prehistorical texts. The various visuals imparting the feeling of vastness and danger of ancient earth where landscapes of primitive dense jungles and predatory dinosaurs transition to action packed scenes of the movie.
VFX and Sound Effects:
Numerous visual effects were used to recreate the prehistoric creatures that were obstacles for the characters, and the visual effects did not disappoint. Alongside the roaring of dinosaurs and the roar of the wilderness, the sound effects created an immersive experience that complemented the visuals.
Reception:
Audiences were not spoilt for choice with “65”, as the reviews given were rather mixed. Both Adam Driver and Ariana Greenblatt received praise for their roles in the film along with the atmosphere being suspenseful, however the plot itself was criticized to be lacking in originality. The film has a rating of 5.4/10 on IMDB and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 35%.
Conclusion:
“65” is an interesting combination of a survival thriller and a science fiction film with the performances of the leading actors elevating it further. The film is set on ancient Earth and the story revolves around the concepts of sacrifice and determination in terms of protecting one’s family. The movie did not receive the best reviews but for fans of action packed survival events, this film is perfect.
