Aside from some amateurish filming moments, this was a very interesting movie. I really love the male actors. They were totally believable.”
On the contrary, others had issues with the technical aspects that were not in their favor. A Letterboxd review stated, “There is a whole lot I could critique about this movie. It’s not particularly well written, it is quite poorly shot and edited…” In spite of these critiques, the film’s attempt to depict a trans romance narrative has been noted as a positive advancement in storytelling.
Evaluation:
The film “Romeo and Isabella” delves into the often avoided subject of trans identities in popular films. Gabby Amourr as Isabella is remarkable in the film and adds depth to the character. Their romance is interesting; however, some parts of the script do not adequately develop their relationship.
The film has a number of problems with its execution, including poor quality imagery and editing, that lower its impact. The film does, however, have a great deal of emotional impact and courageously tackles issues of identity and acceptance, which makes it stand out in modern cinema.
In summary “Romeo and Isabella” is an admirable, but unsuccessful attempt to tell an engaging and inspiring romance. It will not please everyone because of the myriad of technical issues, but nonetheless, it is important for its content and themes.
