“Flight Risk (2025)” is a breathtaking thriller set in the heights of the Alaskan wilderness. When danger is as high as the airplane itself, accompanied by loss of trust, “Flight Risk” is Gibson’s leap back into filmmaking after 10 years. The overwrought plot is set in a small private aircraft and features an array of stunning twists that send the viewer on a nerve-wrecking experience.
The plot follows Harris (Michelle Dockery), a Marshal tasked with one of the most delicate and dangerous jobs around. Escorting Winston (Topher Grace), a witness set to testify against a chiseling mob theather, is akin to sitting next to a ticking time bomb. Designed to keep him away from any public visibility or enemy sight, the transport op utilizes a rugged plane driven by smooth talking Daryl Booth (Mark Wahlberg), but is Daryl really just “a no nonsense” pilot?
What starts off as a tedious yet stressful journey swiftly spins out of control. Harris’ begins to spot flaws in Booth’s pilot ability and soon finds herself lost in the middle of a deadly game. The chase is on, and her only hope lies in uncovering the spell Booth has cast on everyone around. The battle devolves into a life or death showdown filled with jaw-dropping bends and reveals.
This is an exhilarating stubborn fight to the death. Apart from battling for their own survival, Harris and Winston have to contend with Booth’s murderous intentions and the hostile Alaskan weather. The small aircraft morphs into both a combat zone and a cage, with every drop in altitude and technical glitch introducing fresh suspense. The film is an adrenaline-filled thrill ride from starting to finish filled with sabotage and psychological warfare at 10,000 feet as the audience wonders what will happen when the three characters’ motives and powers clash.
The climax sees struggle in the most extreme form, testing both their physical and ethical limits. In a landscape governed by chaos, betrayal, and desperation, there appears only one law to follow: survive.

Analysis and Themes
The absence of trust is one of the major themes in the film Flight Risk. When trust is absent and everything falls apart, the stakes become greater. The movie illustrates betrayal, obligation, and self-preservation in a world where everyone constructs a facade.
The character Daryl Booth challenges the boundaries of good and evil. While his actions are villainous, his motivations have some shades of gray. He is a hired assassin in a world where loyalty and morality can be bought and sold. Conversely, Madolyn Harris’ character represents moral courage and fortitude to a mind – numbing degree.
The Alaskan wilderness is more than a setting; it is a character which poses problems in the form of violent storms, and incredibly large amounts of isolation, all of which serve to enhance the feeling of being trapped. The plane is set in a starkly comforting environment, which feels airless and claustrophobic. The beauty of the wilderness is tantalizing and deadly, so both freedom and captivity are perilous from different aspects.
As with most movies of this scope, Flight Risk received a mix of reviews upon release. It currently has an IMDb rating of 5.2 from users, indicating a divide in criticism. The film’s premise as well as the tension of the confined setting received praise, while Mark Wahlberg’s portrayal of Booth was recognized as adding menace and unpredictability.
Some reviewers, however, found flaws in the script, arguing that while the premise is interesting, the movie falls into B-list movie territory due to the outlandish situations. The direction of Mel Gibson was said to be lively, but he had lost some of the polish of his earlier works due to the reliance on spectacle rather than subtlety.
Nonetheless, audiences appreciated the film for how it was- a chewable, fast paced thriller filled with action and suspense. Dockery’s portrayal of the sharp, agile US Marshall was perhaps the most remarkable as she displayed blend of fragility and strength, demonstrating both mental and physical agility.
Box Office Revenue
Flight Risk had an impressive opening weekend, coming first and earning $11.6 million domestically in the first few days. It was truly impressive, especially because other releases during this time were quite competitive. The marketing of the film with well-known names and the suspense inducing trailer definitely helped garner an audience.
Sadly the movie did experience a steep decline in sales in the following weeks and ended with a grossed total of around $43.6 million. The film, by Big Studio standards, wasn’t a triumph, but for a mid-budget thriller, those figures were rather significant.
Notes on Production
Flight Risk was shot on location in Las Vegas, Mesquite, and Alaska. The production encountered logistical difficulties, particularly with obtaining realistic aerial shots, which had to be filmed with practical effects and enhanced with CGI. Principal photography began in June 2023 and received special consideration\exemption to proceed during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike owing to previous arrangements.\
Rosenberg’s script was arguably the most awaited one because it featured in the 2020 black list of the most liked unproduced motion pictures in Hollywood.
Conclusion
Flight Risk (2025) is a heart-racing, edge-of-your-seat thriller that’s full of action and suspense, albeit lacking in creativity. The powerful performances of Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Dockery drive the film, which is a tightly woven, fast-paced tale of treachery and endurance. Though it may not win any awards, it’s an entertaining mid-tier thriller that is perfect for those looking for a pulse-pounding film at 10,000 feet where trust is scarce and the only aim is to survive.
