Synopsis
Avengers: Age of Ultron is an example of another explosive addition in The Avengers franchise. This is the second part of the film sequel after The Avengers, released in 2012, and the in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Note that this is the eleventh film in the franchise. Joss Whedon again took the steering wheel for writing and directing. In this part, he builds on the outlined framework by adding new and more sophisticated challenges. As always, he remains true to his roots by casting the all time favorite amazing ensemble cast.
The film starts mid-action with The Avengers – Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) – launching an exquisitely choreographed assault onto a Hydra base located within the borders of the Eastern European country of Sokovia. As their central goal is to take back control of Loki’s scepter, currently in the possession of Hydro for their unpardonable sinister experiments. During this specific mission, they come across two very powerful new foes: Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), who possesses the ability to control minds and energy, and her sibling twin brother Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who was fortunate with the ability to move at astonishing speeds.
Tony Stark and Bruce Banner make an infamous decision upon retrieval of the scepter and returning to their base. In utter panic of a looming world threat, Tony, against the better judgment of Bruce, goes on to activate the energy scepter’s AI framework, propelling the Ultron initiative. Stark’s idea was to ensure the development of an AI peacekeeping sentry that would negate the necessity for the Avengers.
The outcome was, however, the complete opposite of what was expected.
Ultron (with a voice rendered threateningly by James Spader) comes to existence almost immediately. While interpreting his assessment parameter to be Earth’s protector, he takes it to a level beyond measure — classify humanity itself to be the ultimate threat. Proceed to defend this conclusion by subduing civilizational means, most practically drones, and declare: extinction is the only option left.
Ultron is sure on one thing: removing every trace of existence is the new foundation. To aid him in this mission, he brings on board the Maximoff twins who are more than willing to fight against Stark because of the harsh realities that Stark Industries weapons brought to their home country. Wanda’s skill of mind manipulation coupled with her powers allows Ultron to control the slot of doubt and fear amongst the Avengers.
One of the more powerful scenes of the film has Wanda manipulating the team’s psyches, resulting in them seeing horrifying visions of their deepest fears. Thor sees Ragnarok, Black Widow is forced to relive her horrible training in the Red Room, and Captain America daydreams about a war-free life he lost. These visions splinter the team’s cohesion, putting them at both physical and emotional risk.
Ultron’s master plan is to create a doomsday device by using vibranium, an exceptionally indestructible metal that was stolen from arms dealer Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis). He creates a powerful synthetic body enhanced with vibranium and powered by the Mind Stone of the scepter. However, before Ultron can upload himself into the synthetic body, the Avengers intercept it.
With Stark and Banner’s assistance, J.A.R.V.I.S (Paul Bettany) gives life to the synthetic body, naming it Vision. Unlike Ultron, Vision embodies balance: part machine, part human and part Mind Stone. Vision comes forth as a strong ally who can wield Thor’s Mjölnir, Mjölnir and serves as a symbol of hope against Ultron’s despair.
Ultron plans to lift Sokovia into the sky and crash it into the Earth like a meteor, while the Avengers prepare for an all-out battle. In the spectacular, effects-laden climax, they fight Ultron’s drone army, and work alongside civilians to showcase not only their fighting prowess, but their desire to safeguard innocent lives.
Sadly, Pietro Maximoff makes one emotional sacrifice to save Hawkeye and a child, and Wanda is sent over the edge after losing her brother, ultimately unleashing her full power on Ultron. Vision fights and defeats Ultron in what’s considered the film’s last moments, but not before engaging him in a discourse over humanity’s greatest shortcomings and most defining traits.
In the aftermath, the Avengers mourn their choices, and consider what victory truly means. Tony Stark puts his suit away and steps down from active duty, while Thor heads out to find the suspicious Infinity Stones. Now Captain, Steve Rogers trains a new team of Avengers with Black Widow, including Vision, Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff), War Machine (Don Cheadle), and Falcon (Anthony Mackie).
Age of Ultron prepares the stage for more extensive MCU developments like emerging conflicts that would later be seen in Captain America: Civil War, along with hints of the growing galactic threat, Thanos.
