Eyes Wide Shut

Synopsis:

Psychological drama-thriller combining eroticism, mystery, and dreamlike surrealism, Eyes Wide Shut is a film steered by the great Stanley Kubrick. It was released in 1999, posthumously after Kubrick’s death. The movie is an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella Traumnovelle (Dream Story). The setting is moved from early 20th-century Vienna to present day New York City but still maintains the themes of fidelity, temptation, repression, and the duality of fantasy and reality.

The film focuses on a respected Upper Middle Class Physician Dr. Bill Harford, played by Tom Cruise, who seems to live a perfect life with his wife Alice, a staying-at-home mother with a part time job, and a daughter. On the surface, their marriage seems stable, but it becomes increasingly clear that the couple is emotionally and sexually disconnected. One holiday party during the winter, Bill is socializing with a wealthy patient and throws a party. During this particular party, Alice is swept away to dance with a Hungarian man. At the same time, Bill is approached by two stunning women. These encounters serve as critical moments that define the ever-growing tension in their relationship.

Following the party, Alice shares with Bill a candid and unconventional admission of desire where she remembers dreaming about leaving him to be with a naval officer she encountered during a vacation. This shocking confession alters the entire marriage dynamic for Bill, and he undergoes a psychological experience that consumes his thoughts for the remainder of the film.

Altered and detached, Bill sets out on an emotional and psychosexual journey across New York City, seeking to fill an existential void. Throughout the journey, he meets a series of bizarre and sexually charged encounters like a prostitute named Domino, a seductive daughter of one of his deceased patients and the most important of all, an anachronistic masked orgy party of an elite secret society.

This extreme masquerade Republicans have ostracized him from is excessively extravagant and beautiful, as well as intimidating. Unlike traditional orgies, there are more stylized, choreographed sexual revelries performed by masked inhabitants. Bill recently learned the password from an old friend. Upon entering, he gets immediately defined as an outsider after a brief window of time and is subsequently told about other dangers lurking around his life due to breaching their domain. This leads him to nearly getting killed attempting to escape fleeing, only to return home disturbed and anxious.

The remaining portions of this film are still dedicated to tracking Bill’s resolve regarding the aftermath of his actions. He is stalked, cautioned, and accosted by several individuals who allude to the fact that either he or his wife could be in danger. His reality-chasing efforts do nothing but frustrate him more because it is unclear whether what he has seen was authentic, crafted, or concocted.

Ultimately, or perhaps sadly, he goes back to Alice and unashamedly admits everything. Instead of receiving him with rage, Alice responds in an exceptionally gentle and confounding manner. Without needing or providing any explanation, she proposes they show gratitude for escaping whilst reminding him to redirect their attention to piece their life back together again. The concluding remarks of the film layer a different perspective onto the entire surreal sequence, with Alice loudly declaring, “Fuck,” in a single breath capturing both sobriety and startling emotion.

Cast and Crew:

Dr. Bill Harford is played by Tom Cruise – Arguably one of the most covertly complex and multifaceted performances of his career, laid bare is restraint and inner conflict while portraying Harford. As confusion, arrogance, vulnerability, and obsessiveness define his characterization, subtle distinctions mark the shifts Harford goes through as he attempts to navigate a realm beyond his grasp.

Nicole Kidman as Alice Harford – Kidman never fails to bring depth and intensity in all her roles. Even though she does not have as much screen time as Cruise, she dominants the film, particularly during the hot conversation that sets off the entire story arc, and the rest of the movie virtually revolves around this scene.

Sydney Pollack as Victor Ziegler – Pollack’s performance is both Ziegler and son at the same time, exuding fatherly qualities and domestic ambiguity. He is menacing, yet captures the essence of the wealthy host who seems to have more connections to this elusive underbelly than is openly avowed, thus adding depth to the morals given in the film.

Todd Field as Nick Nightingale – The character of Nick who plays a jazz pianists serves as the link that leads Bill to the untold universe depicting fantasy and reality. The tragic end of the character adds more mystery hence creating a discomforting undercurrent to the film.

Director and Creative Vision:

Stanley Kubrick wrote and directed this last film, “Eyes Wide Shut” in a culmination of his string of works. His films were perfected touches of brutality which he dials up by forsaking details of his entire life into the project. In this case, pre production lasted years, while filming took a year, following the control paradigm Kubrick literal built in the film itself.

The film features a dreamy aesthetic with lengthy tracking shots, surreal lighting, and ambiguous storytelling. Reality is carefully manipulated by Kubrick to make viewers off-balance; are we witnessing something real, symbolic, or a mere projection of Bill’s subconscious?

Use of the spatial design, color palette, and soundtrack are distinctly Kubrick. The crimson-lit mansion sequence remains one of the most dreadfully fabled scenes filled with ritualistic mystery and erotic tension. The decision to feature the film during Christmas with soft golden lights against the cold city adds to the film’s sensual and psychologically dark undertones.

Eyes Wide Shut is packed with multi-faceted and multi-directional themes, some of which are:

  • Sexual Repression and Desire: The contrast between reality and intentions of infidelity poses questions on the psychology behind monogamy and the hidden desires which people tend to suppress.
  • Power and Class: The masked society signifies the upper lawn of society that exists above the law and is unapproachable. Bill’s incursion into this zone reveals the fragility of the control he believed he had over his life.

Dream versus reality – The film contiuously mixes the phantasmic and the real. The entire plot appears to be woven from the gossamer threads of Bill’s fantasies. The title — Eyes Wide Shut — indicates a form of self-imposed blindness or the deliberate refusal to comprehend the phenomenon that presents itself.

Jealousy and identity – Bill’s odyssey is more than mere sexual escapades or betrayal. It is an encounter with his own vulnerability, the search for social recognition, and the need to reclaim dominion over a reality that proves to be out of control.
