Intimate Obsession

Synopsis

Lawrence Lanoff directed the 1992 erotic thriller Intimate Obsession. The film is representative of the early-90s softcore thrillers that delved into the passions of love, jealousy, betrayal, and the murky waters of fantasy and reality. Set against the luxurious multi-million dollar estates of California, the strife of taboo fantasies and deadly obsessions weaves an irresistible draw.

This film centers on Carol, a stunningly beautiful, yet mysteriously discontented, young woman in her mid-twenties. She is shown trapped in a strained marriage with her husband, a multi-millionaire businessman who harbors emotionally neglectful tendencies towards her. Richard, Carol’s husband, is a high-powered businessman who, to the couple’s social circle, “appears” to dot the i’s and cross the t’s on maintaining a wholesome family image. And so it is true for Carol that life with a business tycoon comes along with jet set vacations and luxury brands. Carol starts feeling more and more like a trophy and less like a housewife, which triggers the fertile ground of temptation.

Now enters Jack, an aloof, yet charming and deeply intriguing, artist living a bohemian lifestyle. The transformation set in motion feels uneasy for her initially, but, paired with the confidence Jack exudes, makes for an elating combination. This winds up opening new doors and Jack begins introducing Carol somewhere else: exotique.

What starts as playful flirting quickly evolves into full-fledged cheating. Jack’s charm captures Carol’s attention, and their secret rendezvous become bolder and more fervent. However, the thrill of the affair soon gives rise to more sinister undertones. His obsession with her grows deeper and it becomes apparent that his affection is dangerously possessive.

Adding to this complexity is Jack’s former partner, Tina, who gets caught up in the tempestuous love triangle. With Jack appearing to be more and more interested in Carol, Tina becomes more erratic with jealousy. She strays even further from rationality, propelling the boundary of eroticism into real psychological turmoil.

For Carol, both sides of the triangular conflict add pressure towards a breaking point. She realizes her new life is becoming increasingly difficult to control while the line between love and obsession is becoming extremely vague. Beneath the surface of Jack’s passion lies greed and an overpowering need to control and possess. Jack’s pursuit is now a threat – not only to her marriage but her safety as well. Ultimately, Carol is left with the consequences of her decisions and the latent danger truly lurking in her desire. She has no option but to act fast.

The thrilling apex of the film’s plot features a heart-pounding accumulation of events that merges revelation with confrontation, leading to an ultimate denouncement of the consequences of taboo love. Thus, Intimate Obsession encapsulates not only passionate rendezvous, but also a reflection on the eroding effects of desire unchecked.

IMDb Scores and Reviews

Intimate Obsession tends to average an IMDb rating in the low-4s. While this does place the film in lower reputation territory for most cinema, it is important to remember to take into account the era and genre of the film. Thrillers of an erotic pattern released in the early ‘90s were often aimed at late-night cable television or direct-to-video. Shallow as it may sound, these films were greatly revered for the provocative nature and themes that ran throughout the movie.

Audience reception of Intimate Obsession is mixed but leans toward favorable among genre enthusiasts. Audience members that enjoy steamy suspenseful erotic thrillers are more likely than not to enjoy the sultry milieu, attractive cast, and dramatic overtures of the film. Softcore fans did get what was promised in terms of sensual content while somehow maintaining a narrative that included psycholigiacal tension and moral ramifications.

Critics, however, are more divided. Some saw this film as a banal addition to a well-populated genre saying its more predictable than basic plot, stylish, shallow characters, and mediocre character development. Other critiques pointed out the effectiveness in building erotic tension and praised its devotion to mood and aesthetic, even if the story itself is rather unoriginal.

As a cult classic, Intimate Obsession continues to enthrall fans who adore the mix of suspense in erotic thrillers. Though lacking in critical acclaim and mainstream recognition, the film is still popular among those attracted to obsessive love and dangerous liaisons.
