Ninja Assassin

Summary

Ninja Assassin is a 2009 action-thriller film that combines modern-day revenge with martial arts mayhem. Directed by James McTeigue and produced by The Matrix’s Wachowskis, the film explores the secretive world of ninja clans and the art of assassination that dates back centuries. Viacom offered “stylized violence” and “fast-paced action” while attempting to give life to a bleak and savage story of revenge.

The plot follows Raizo, portrayed by the South Korea pop star Rain, who is trained as one of the most deadly operatives of the Ozunu Clan. This ancient, and perhaps mythical, group of assassins purportedly has an ancient clan concealed in legends. Raizo was removed from the streets as a child and is tempered by the merciless Lord Ozunu (violently acted by Shô Kosugi), who terrorized global intelligence agencies.

Operating in silence, the Ozunu Clan rents out their violent expertise to governments and criminal enterprises all over the globe. They follow a strict code of conduct that requires loyalty and compliance without question which is insane. It is during his descent into adulthood that assassins like Raizo begin to scrutinize the unreasoned subservience that is ruthlessly enforced on them. The slaughter of his close friend and fellow trainee Kiriko, who is executed for her desperate attempt at escaping the life of an assassin, fractures his spirit. Attempting to save her, Raizo fails and becomes traumatized, which sparks his decision to rebel.

After the cold-blooded slaying of Kiriko, as her consciousness is brutally torn apart thanks to the incessant clash of beauty and the cruelty of reality, Raizo becomes disillusioned with the clan’s sheer ruthlessness. Forced to become a fugitive, he single-handedly goes to war against the brothers that were once his family, all while vowing to dismantle the clan that stripped him of his humanity.

Alongside Raizo’s story is that of Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris), who in her pursuit of political assassins connects the dots to the Ozunu Clan. Her pursuit of the truth places her in dire circumstances; her life is at risk and the clan’s assassins set their sights on her. Raizo rescues Mika from an attempted assassination and the two decide to work together. Raizo feels that Mika is the perfect instrument to aid his redemption—and his chance to expose the Ozunu while they still have the chance.

The remaining part of the film depicts Raizo and Mika as they attempt to escape the relentless onslaught from the clan. In a harsh and definitive final confrontation, Raizo comes to face his training, his past, and Lord Ozunu. Ultimately, he wins, but not without sacrifice. Now, he is free from the shadows but leaves in his wake the ruins of the only life he has ever known.

Cast & Crew

Rain (Raizo): In his Hollywood debut, Rain (Jung Ji-hoon) offers a gripping portrayal complete with physical and emotional intensity. An already established singer and actor in South Korea, Rain dedicated months of preparation to the role, mastering martial arts, weaponry, and undergoing extreme physical conditioning. His charm and devotion helped meld Eastern and Western styles of filming.

Naomie Harris (Mika Coretti): Harris plays the visionary Europol agent who unveils the deadly conspiracy linked to the ninja assassins. Her character provides a realistic viewpoint, balancing the fiction with reality. Widely recognized for her role in the 28 Days Later film and the James Bond series, the British actress brings authenticity and depth to the role.

Shô Kosugi (Lord Ozunu): A Shô Kosugi is the explosive 1980s ninja cinema legend who takes on the mantle of the film’s central antagonist. His portrayal of the merciless head of the ninja clan lord Ozunu brought a new deal of perception to the wizardry of ninjas and added costive criticism as to how they have been portrayed in movies. Casting Kosugi is also meant to pay respect to older martial arts films.

Rick Yune (Takeshi): With a chilling ferocity, Yune takes on the role of Takeshi, a fellow assassin and rival to Raizo. His character embodies the extremes of loyalty and savagery that Raizo renounced. The struggle between them becomes a compelling centerpiece for one of the film’s intricate conflicts.

James McTeigue (Director): The stylish and kinetic feel of Ninja Assassin is credited to the director of V for Vendetta, McTeigue. The seamless integration of sleek visuals, thematic depth, and action choreography in the film signals the director’s experience alongside the Wachowskis.

Wachowskis (Producers and Writers): Along with bold concepts, earmarked action and metaphorical narrative has become a trademark of the renowned Lana and Lilly Wachowski since the Matrix trilogy. Their impact on the motion picture is seen through the film’s philosophical undercurrents, polished visual imagery, and enhanced footage of the fight scenes.

Chad Stahelski & David Leitch (Action Choreographers): The masterminds behind the stunt and fight choreography of Ninja Assassin, Stahelski and Leitch, became directors of the John Wick franchise later on. The duo’s innovative work in the fusion of martial arts and cinematic spectacle is what shaped their future success.

IMDb Ratings

The action martial arts film ‘Ninja Assassin’ has an average rating of 6.3/10 on IMDb, with tens of thousands of viewer ratings. It received mixed to positive reviews, with particular praise for the action choreography. Almost all viewers appreciated the sheer cinematographic pizzazz and intensity of the fight scenes which were frequently zoomed in on, bathed in digital blood or executed in slow motion, and featured sleek camera work.

However, the plot suffered some criticism for being in some places very predictable or leaning too heavily on genre conventions. In addition, some critics judged the dialogue to be stilted or robotic and character construction to be lacking, barring Raizo’s arc, as many reviewers argued was shallow.

Regardless of the criticism, the film has a dedicated cult following, especially among martial arts and action movie fans. Its devotion to stylized violence and ninja homage, as well as Rain’s box-office performance, have elevated ‘Ninja Assassin’ to classic status. Upon release, and even years later, the film is often rememebered for its striking and unapologetically brutal submission to the action genre.

Ninja Assassin attempts to combine the classical storytelling of martial arts with contemporary film style, and it automatically makes itself distinctive. Its unending speed, intricately choreographed battles, and instrumental motifs centered around loyalty and vengeance offers an exhilarating experience for fans of both Eastern and Western action movies. Admittedly, there are some issues to address, but this still stands out as one of the best films during the ninja-themed cinema revival in the 2000s.
