Synopsis
No Hard Feelings is a 2023 American romantic comedy film directed by Gene Stupnitsky, co-writer of Bad Teacher and director of Good Boys. The film features Jennifer Lawrence, who starred in and produced the film, marking a return to the comedy genre for the Oscar-winning actress. The film combines slapstick and coming-of-age humor in a way that is strikingly creative and compelling, uprooting traditional rom-com structures with bold premises, vibrant performances, and witty dialogue.
The film is centered on Maddie Barker (Jennifer Lawrence), an Uber driver and bartender in her early thirties, living in Montauk, Long Island. She’s brash and reckless, and is trying to maintain the childhood home her mother left her after dying, but is struggling to do so. Maddie loses her car to repossession, and is now in need of money, as well as a vehicle to maintain her rideshare work.
While looking for easy money to make, Maddie comes across a strange Craigslist post from rich helicopter parents (Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti) looking to hire a young woman to “date” their socially anxious 19-year-old son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) before he goes off to Princeton. Maddie learns that the parents goal is to help Percy “come out of his shell” and gain life experience.
Crippled by the thought of giving up a free car, Maddie reluctantly decides to accept the offer and seduce Percy to help him come out of his shell. What follows are a great deal of charming and humorous encounters as Maddie learns that Percy is much more sophisticated than she originally thought due to his overwhelming moral compass. With Maddie as the target, Percy emotionally and intellectually battles against her.
Despite leaning heavily into sexual innuendos, the film seems to strike a sincere emotional chord as well. Maddie, the most cynical and jaded woman, begins to self-reflect on her current life situation, which feels uneventful. It isn’t merely biological attraction—Percy’s imbecility starts to soften; she grows to appreciate his kindness, his honesty, and his unwillingness to blend in with the crowd. In turn, Percy’s confidence and perspective deepen as he learns to follow his instincts and assert himself.
As for the film’s finale, it is both emotionally moving and powerful; the characters part with each other and themselves respectfully transformed and appreciative. Maddie is able to constructively move on with her life by dissipating some emotional burdens, and Percy is moving off to college now clearer in self-identity and direction. They have struck an internal balance between chaos and peace.
Cast & Crew
Jennifer Lawrence as Maddie Barker: Lawrence delivers a performance that is both comedic and heartfelt. From over-the-top raunchy scenes inspired by her stand-up career to tender moments, she goes beyond for the character of Maddie who ultimately struggles with deep vulnerability. She accomplishes the film’s blurring of crude comedy and emotional resolve, which requires balance from both sides.
Andrew Barth Feldman as Percy Becker: Feldman, coming out of the musical theater scene (Dear Evan Hansen), richly captures the performance of an exceptionally bright, socially awkward adolescent. His chemistry with Lawrence surprises—it’s tender, too—and he manages to sustain balance during the physically comedic and emotionally earnest moments.
Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick as Percy’s parents: The duo portrays over the top suburban parents who serve unparalleled cluelessness in their attempt to fix Mauck into the role of matchmaker. However, Benanti and Broderick’s unique brand of restrained humor shines through.
Directed by Gene Stupnitsky: Stupnitsky’s direction blends well-timed gags with opportunities to enrich the characters. He fully embraces the silliness of the plot’s premise, but confining the story to an emotional core helps avoid an overly sweet tone.
Written by Gene Stupnitsky and John Phillips: Balanced between edgy and heartfelt, the unsentimental and deeply humorous banter delivers through the screenplay, with character arcs carrying its impact.
Produced by Jennifer Lawrence, Alex Saks, Naomi Odenkirk, and Marc Provissiero: The team ensures clean, uncluttered production while capturing bright and sunny montauk seaside scenes coupled with intimate character moments.
Music by David Boman. The soundtrack features energetic pop and indie songs which underscore the youthful spirit and emotional subtext of the film.
IMDb Ratings
Currently, the rating for No Hard Feelings hovers around 6.4/10 on IMDb, indicating a lukewarm to positive reception. Viewers seemed to enjoy the nostalgic vibe of the film which invokes a more contemporary feeling while being reminiscent of early 2000s teen comedies such as American Pie and There’s Something About Mary. Critics praised Jennifer Lawrence for her performance and commitment to the role in addition to her natural comedic timing, claiming that her contribution elevates the material above genre clichés.
The movie also earned recognition for its acceptance of adult humor without a mean-spirited undertone. It flirts with controversy through its premise but surprises viewers by flipping expectations and portraying Percy as more emotionally mature than one might assume. It also touches on topics such as economic anxiety, self worth, age gap relationships, and self esteem in a surprisingly light-hearted manner.
That said, some critics argued the film did not fully embrace its provocative premise and opted for safe storytelling instead of truly subversive methods. Some also highlighted the more problem at hand, which was the blend of crude humor and emotional sensitivity — describing the gaps between the two as jarring.
Conclusion
No Hard Feelings is an unrestrained take on a contemporary romantic comedy. The film captivates with its raw emotional insight and outrageous humor. While the premise seems radically inappropriate on the surface, the film uses it as a springboard to explore themes of self growth, profound loneliness, and messy coming-of-age—no matter how far one is into life’s journey.
The pulse of the film is set by Jenifer Lawrence’s unapologetic shadow. She does not play Maddie as a cliché desperate woman. Rather, she embodies a deeply flawed human trying to get through life’s disappointments. Percy’s character is brought to life in a warm and authentic way by Andrew Barth Feldman. Their interactions challenge many gender and age stereotypes of Hollywood comedies and are remarkably refreshing.
No Hard Feelings is not merely a straightforward raunchy comedy. It brilliantly portrays the idea of connection—how two people coming from drastically different worlds can help each other grow. This awkward, funny, yet touchy film strikes the perfect balance between humor and heart making it one of the finest modern comedies of our time.
