Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Synopsis

Shang-Chi’s storyline is unlike any other in the MCU. Released in 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings marked a stunning addition to the MCU, being the first film carrying an Asian lead superhero. It was directed by the talented Destin Daniel Cretton. The film is a delight for marvel fans as its blended with heaps of action, humor, and heart while also addressing family legacies, culture, and true strength.
The plot centers around Shang-Chi as he navigates life in San Francisco—the changes his life brings, new lifestyle, and the people he meets. Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi, and we see him begin his story as an unassuming parking valet named Shaun. He shares his workplace with his best buddy, Katy, played by Awkwafina who brings all of her humorous charm to the character. Under the surface lies Shang-Chi’s hidden dark past which he has yet to face. The son of Xu Wenwu, the powerful and seemingly immortal leader of the ancient Ten Rings organization, carries the monstrous legacy of his father. Wenwu is the bearer of the Ten Rings, a mark of unimaginable supremacy and life given to him through magic.

Many years ago, after the death of his beloved wife Ying Li (Fala Chen), Wenwu spiraled into grief and darkness. Shifu began molding his son into an elite assassin. Shang-Chi could not withstand the life his father had crafted for him, and in his teenage years fled to America, leaving his sister Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) behind along with his fate.

But Shang-Chi’s past haunts him when assassins from The Ten Rings try to kill him in broad daylight on a city bus. In one of the most exciting, intricately choreographed fight scenes, Shang-Chi demonstrates his martial arts skills, to the disbelief of Katy, who was completely unaware of his talents. The previous attack marks Wenwu’s attempt to pull his estranged children back into his orbit.

Concerned for his sister’s wellbeing, Shang-Chi now goes on a trip to Macau alongside Katy, where they discover Xialing operating an underground fight club. The loss of her siblings shaped Xialing into a more complex character. Unlike them, she has controlled her father’s legacy and refuses to be defined by it. Their relationship is cold at best, but they must all come together when Wenwu’s forces raid the place and capture them all.

Wenwu expresses his belief that their mother’s spirit is held captive in the mystical village of Ta Lo, her hidden ancestral home contained in another realm. Obsessed with mourning, Wenwu intends to conquer Ta Lo and forcibly shatter its gates because he believes that doing so will set his wife free. The reality is far more sinister. An ancient, soul-devouring entity known as the Dweller-in-Darkness perpetually holds Wenwu under their influence, manipulating his grief in order to set itself free.

The comedic Iron Man 3 character, Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), serves as both comic relief and a link to the Ten Rings lore, helping Shang-Chi, Xialing, and Katy break out of the Ten Rings compound. Accompanied by the mythical creature Morris, they travel to Ta Lo where they are greeted by the villages’ warriors, including their aunt, Ying Nan (Michelle Yeoh).

Filled with remarkable creatures and steeped in ancient power, Ta Lo is a breathtaking, mystical sight. It is there that Shang-Chi uncovers his mother’s legacy and the true reason why he had been bestowed his powers. Under the guidance of his aunt, he learns to embody the strength of his father while also having the wisdom of his mother, indicating that he had begun to accept himself in his entirety.

The climax is marked by the grand showdown of Wenwu’s army against the guardians of Ta Lo. While warriors engage in battle, Wenwu shatters the barrier imprisoning the Dweller-in-Darkness using the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi faces his father in a deeply personal fight for his life and sanity in a duel for control not only against Wenwu’s violence but the sorrow and shame that poisoned him.

In the end, Wenwu too late sees the whole picture. In what could be called redemption, he chooses to die instead and save Shang-Chi by transferring the Ten Rings to his son. With the ample strength given by both parents, Shang-Chi takes control of the powerful Dweller-In-Darkness, with Xialing, Katy and the rest of the warriors from Ta Lo helping him defeat the monstrous threat.

The film ends with Shang-Chi and Katy back in San Francisco only to be recruited by Wong which hints at their incorporation into the larger MCU and setting up new adventures.

Cast & Crew

As is the case with every MCU film, the cast of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is exceptional and in this case the film exceeds the superhero film boundaries.

Simu Liu as Shang-Chi

In his first major role, Liu showcases the physicality and emotional complexity of Shang-Chi. Liu’s humor, inner conflict, and heroism shine through in his portrayal, solidifying his status as a charming and relatable protagonist.

Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu

Leung’s performance of Wenwu is a standout in the film. He adds depth to the villain as more than just a ruthless conqueror; Wenwu is a shattered husband and a multi-dimensional father. His emotional performance anchors the film and makes Wenwu one of the most interesting antagonists in the MCU.

Katy by Awkwafina

In her role, Awkwafina brings humor and heart to the story, allowing the audience to experience Shang-Chi’s world through her perspective. She has great chemistry with Liu, which helped ease the darker undertones in the movie, and her transformation from a comedic damsel to a brave ally was one of the most rewarding aspects of the film.

Meng’er Zhang as Xialing

Zhang makes her film debut portraying Shang-Chi’s sister, an impressive role. Xialing is headstrong, self-reliant, and resourceful, and her relationship with her brother expands the family narrative.

Michelle Yeoh as Ying Nan

Director Destin Daniel Cretton seamlessly integrates family themes with martial arts action. His sensitivity to character development, forged in his previous film, Short Term 12, is also present in his work on Shang-Chi, ensuring the film has a strong emotional anchor despite its action sequences.

The captivating action set pieces on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings performed by Brad Allan is regarded as one of the greatest in the MCU, expertly fusing martial arts with superhero hijinks. In terms of visuals, Shang-Chi absolutely stuns, whether it be during the sword-etched skyline of Ta Lo or the high-octane bus fight. The soundtrack Joel P. West composed for the film also features Eastern and Western elements, enhancing the film’s story, while further complimenting it’s themes.
