Critical Reception:
“Sting” has elicited more of a mixed to average response from critics and journalists as well. The audience score is slightly lower as the film does tend to evoke polarized opinions. The number may sound reasonably high, but it’s still sits a bit lower when compared with the Rotten Tomatoes rating.
57 out of a total of 100 with the maximum number of reviews being sixteen paints a picture of mediocre of mixed reviews which does retain a positive outlook.
In his article, Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com posits that the film “more often than not looks like a film that is the product of fans who are excited but don’t care,” so, while this movie may be entertaining at times, it was probably poorly written and wouldn’t have been interesting to watch.
As John Serba notes in the words of his fellow reviewer, Decider, “so long as you’re in the right mood, preferably the slightly inebriated kind, you will not be lashed out by ‘Sting’”, this further suggests that the movie has a more comic edge than what is expected from this genre and can be engaging as a simple creature movie for the audience.
Analysis:
Similar to older creature films such as Arachnophobia and Eight Legged Freaks, “Sting” does pay tribute to such classics. Kiah Roache Turner flawlessly fuses horror and dark humor resulting in a film that is a bundle of jumbled feelings that are weirdly engaging.
The monstrous spider’s design was executed exceptionally well and this marks a great addition to the nostalgia appeal of the film, and the practical effects have been praised as well.
On the other hand, Jermaine Fowler’s portrayal of bug exterminator Frank provides comic relief that goes hand in hand with the tone of the film. While the supporting actors are also impressive, the film is particularly captivated by Alyla Browne’s performance in which she impressively depicts the essence of a young girl in somewhat extraordinary struggles, Charlotte.
The film does manage to instil a sense of nostalgia while offering some thrill, however, there are parts that the critics poor variety of critic providing cliches of the same genre overly twisted plot. This indeed makes the audience less interested as some of the character narrative seems it purposefully kept basic to not add too much detail. Regardless of the negative appraisal, fans of the genre especially those fond of the horror movies from the 1980s would still find it entertaining and worthwhile Sting.
In Summary,
“Sting” earns its place among the premieres by blending in horror and humor in a fashion that pays homage to its prequels. Also the direction presented by Kiah Roache Turner alongside the roles played by the actors serve well to the film which dominates over its short comings to deliver entertainment to the devout fans of horror. The film delivers its share of laughs and features modernizations that would appeal those on the lookout for monster films with a touch of nostalgia supplementing the digital effects presented.
