Plot in Short
Aboard a boat in the Caribbean Sea, a family of four is celebrating the child’s birthday: Julia (Émilie Dequenne), her husband Tom (Andreas Pietschmann), along with their children Cassie (Lisa Delamar) and Ben (Lucas Ebel). Their tranquil cruise turns into chaos as a violent tempest hits, almost capsizing the boat. Once they come to, the family realizes they are now in a range of scenery that used to be ocean, with unrelenting sand surrounding them.
This Earth-shattering change is caused by the magnetic poles shifting instantaneously, resulting in the oceans receding due to the seabed being exposed. The family must adapt to this empty world full of dying remnant sea life, fierce omnivorous sea beasts that have evolved over time, which now threaten what’s left of humanity.
During the course of their travel across the wasteland, the family has to deal with several other challenges like hostile sea life, scavenge seas, and the ever-looming danger of red tides taking over. They set their sight on a renowned submarine which they hope works as a refuge from the tides and would enable them to outrun the swell.

Émilie Dequenne as Julia: The matriarch of the family, Julia is a steadfast and quick witted character who adapts quickly and will go to any lengths to ensure the safety of her children.

Cinematography and Direction
Because of his surrealistic depiction of the post-apocalyptic world, I would suggest it as an interest to watch Luc Besson’s work along with Moebius art for inspiration. The cinematography uses deserted landscapes overshadowed by monstrosities from the sea, turning quaint settings to uncomfortable ones while dream-like mutilation fog the visuals making it synonymous with death.
Barren wasteland becomes but a type of setting the sea offers for the remnants to explore. Through all these endeavors made by sea, created out of pure malice, the characters are using these as a means to establish civilization. The camera aims to focus on the newly extended sea and the fragmented world. The formerly unified Earth transforms into an endless string of sea, isolating everything into individual states. Focus is set on the subtle elements, creating an illusion that the world is a static elder removed from any entity, peace-filled war.
Thematic Analysis and Symbolism
Survive examines multiple deeper themes.
Family and Survival: This film showcases a story about a family and the love they have for each other in the harshest circumstances.
Adaptation and resilience: Overcoming both external and internal challenges reminds us of the character’s resilience in the face of distress.
Human vs. Nature: The catastrophic event helps to further explain the existence of human frailty and defines the impact of disturbing the natural order.
Isolation and Connection: These relationships the family develops over the other survivors highlight the factors of trust, community, and how far someone is willing to go to protect their family.
Critical Comments
Survive has been received positively and negatively by critics and the general public. Anchor some people highlight the film due to its atmosphere, originality and emotional elements. The Guardian called it “surrealist disaster-flick” elaborating on its originality of the depressing post-apocalyptic Era of humanity with surreal imagery.
Others criticize the film regarding pacing and whether or not the narrative is sane. Filmhounds labeled it, “humorless, ridiculous socially unobservant speculative survival thriller,” pointing towards the absent socio-political comments in it.
Regardless of varying critiques, it’s fair to state that most people appreciate the film’s scope; most notably, the central performances by Émilie Dequenne and Andreas Pietschmann.
Production and Release

Not all viewers may appreciate the film, yet the examination of familial relationships, human tenacity, and nature’s chaos provides a memorable spectacle.
