Synopsis
Sweet Girl is a 2021 action-thriller film which is directed by Brian Andrew Mendoza, and marks his first directorial effort, where he intertwines elements of emotional drama, conspiracy, and brutally vivid action. The film features Jason Momoa in the lead role and it explores grief, systemic corruption, and an individual’s quest for justice, framed within the American healthcare system. It tells the story of a man who loses everything and embarks on a mission of vengeance, only for audiences to discover that nothing is quite what it seems.
The story starts with Ray Cooper (Jason Momoa), a devoted husband and father whose life revolves around his wife Amanda and comes crashing down when she suddenly becomes seriously ill with cancer. He has a caring one that comes with a new promising drug that could help her. Unfortunately, the pharmaceutical company BioPrime abruptly removes it from the market under mysterious circumstances. It is later revealed that the reason for the drug being pulled was not safety concerns, but an arrangement between BioPrime and a powerful senator that allowed for far more profitable alternatives to be pushed instead.
Overcome with grief over Amanda’s death and furious at the injustice of corporate avarice, Ray clashes with a BioPrime executive live on television. He promises that measures will be enforced for those who are accountable. This proclamation puts him into direct conflict with powerful foes alongside his teenage daughter, Rachel (Isabela Merced). The two swiftly become ensnared in a web of peril, hunted by assassins, bent officials, and schemers who wish to obliterate the truth.
While Ray attempts to uncover the mysteries surrounding BioPrime, he stumbles upon the depth of the conspiracy which includes Santos, a renowned cartel politician, alongside BioPrime. As one of the pharmaceutical industry’s many faceless vassals, Santos has been systematically eliminating whistleblowers and neutralizing other threats. The film offers several encounters where Ray surrenders to his loss and uncontrollable rage, defending his wife’s honor, heavily engaging in blood-soaked, emotionally charged violence against his foes.
Two-thirds through the film, however, Sweet Girl presents viewers with a profound twist that changes the entire context of the story. In a dramatic reveal, it is shown that Ray has in fact died… From an initial assassination attempt. For the rest of the film, the man believed to be Ray is, shockingly, his daughter, Rachel. She had assumed his identity in her mind as a coping mechanism to process the immense trauma she faced after his death.
Rachel’s character arc reflects both a psychological and emotional twist. Suffocated by grief and mentally frayed at the seams, she carriers out the revenge mission her father trained her for, but detach herself from her identity. The flashback reveal is remarkable, showing how Rachel was in fact visualizing her father commit the acts of violence while she, literally and metaphorically, took center stage as the perpetrator.
With a vengeance, Rachel uses Amanda’s documents to uncover the cover-up which leads her to confront the corrupt senator, and expose him in the media. After eliminating her family’s enemies and revealing the reality of deceitful dominators, she is left without a purpose, vanishing from the public eye. This makes room for the shadow of her father and the life she used to lead.
Cast & Crew
Jason Momoa portrays Ray Cooper as a emotionally charged figure and delivers a powerful performance unlike any other. While also known for his dominating stature and more physically demanding movie roles, Momoa equally manages to bring tenderness as a grieving husband and father. Undoubtedly, his character takes a grip of the first half of the movie, which is laced with memories and heavily affects the second half of the film through the eyes of Rachel.
Rachel Cooper could not have been portrayed better than how Isabela Merced did it. She truly plays the protagonist of the film as her character begins as a supporting character and eventually turns out to be the character that moves the entire story forward. The range of emotions that a teen caught in a brutal world exudes is beautifully showcased by Merced, capturing both her emotional vulnerability and fierce strength.
BioPrime’s assassin and the company’s ‘fixer’ is played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Santos. He is the Rachel’s adversary in the film and serves as a literal personification of the rot that she is trying to fight against.
Justin Bartha along with Raza Jaffrey and Amy Brenneman rounded up a supporting cast who add to the complexities of corruption and conflict.
The film was directed Brian Andrew Mendoza who had previously collaborated with Momoa as a producer. The film’s screenplay was penned by Philip Eisner, Gregg Hurwitz, and Will Staples, and as expected from them, it was action-packed with an undertone of social commentary regarding powerful pharmaceutical companies and the deeply rooted issues within medicine and healthcare systems.
(IMDB rating section)
According to IMDb, Sweet Girl has a rating of nearly 5.5 out of 10, indicating that it received both positive and negative feedback from viewers and critics alike. Although the movie was praised for what was described as an ambitious twist and commendable performances, especially by Merced, it did face criticism due to its uneven pacing and rather predictable action sequences.
The climax came as a shock to almost every viewer. Applauded by some for taking the bold step of a narrative risk, others found it jarring, unconvincing, or poorly executed. Critics commended the reasoning behind the plot twist, but felt the build-up and foreshadowing was lacking in finesse. Nonetheless, most felt the emotional core of the film; grief, loss, the all-consuming vacuum, and the search for justice were well-expressed.
Rachel’s action scenes, especially after the reveal, were highly praised for the intensity of her grounded choreography. Furthermore, the movie’s examination of the father-daughter dynamic inflicted through the lens of psychological trauma and vengeance received immense acclaim, even if the execution was incomplete in several places.
Conclusion
Sweet Girl is both an emotional and visceral action thriller attempting to transcend the limit of genre conventions with the character-driven story of a life-altering loss and unforgivable betrayal. It portrays how a person’s grief can shape their identity, and how the pursuit of justice can extinguish everything in its path.
Jason Momoa and Isabela Merced anchor the film with powerful performances that transcend the action genre, adding tender touches to the mayhem. Even though the film does not completely break free from the clichés of its type, its attempts to step outside the box makes it stand out in the revenge-thriller sub-genre.
For those consumers in search of a combination of compelling drama balanced with bone-crushing action and an unexpected twist, the film offers an exhilarating albeit flawed ride. It is a tale about enduring love and profound loss. The true essence of strength is not found in sheer violence, but instead in the determination to endure when all hope feels extinguished.
