Production Details:
“Tarot” was a united effort that was done under the guidance of Leslie Morgenstein, Scott Glassgold and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton and film companies such as Screen Gems, Alloy Entertainment and Ground Control. This film is a result of One7 which was under the direction of Elie Smolkin whereas Tom Elkins assisted with the film’s editing and Joseph Bishara helped fit the film with a fitting score. By the looks of it, these individuals were keen on the horror aspect of the film as they decided to allocate a budget of $8 million dollars which put their focus on the ramifications that came after meddling with the supernatural.
Release and Reception:
“Tarot” grossed a total of $49.3million after its worldwide release on May 3, 2023 which goes on to show the film did achieve a moderate level of success. However, the critics were not that kind after watching the film as they believed it did not stay true to its genre, thus resulting in the lack of creative scares which led to a predictable and cliché based end. On Rotten Tomatoes, it is rated at 17% and Keith Garlington of “Keith & the Movies” rated it 3/10 stating the kill scenes had no value to the film once the PG- 13 rating was set as the target audience.
Streaming Availability:
On August 1, 2024, “Tarot” was set on Netflix as part of the distribution deal.
This facilitated a wider range of viewers to view the film other than its initial theatrical release.
Critical Analysis:
Tarot was well of the chart commercially but was frowned upon for spreading further misconceptions about Tarot readings and astrology. According to experts, the film distorted actual practices of astrology since it was made to look like winterhoroscopes in conjunction to tarot cards. The film displayed a character that used a different tarot practitioner and stated that it was a bad luck which never was in practice. Furthermore, some movies worked on stereotypical attributes of some zodiac signs which left many people wondering about the austere need for media to be precise.
Conclusion:
Tarot is a clear indication of how much people enjoy supernatural horror films while delving into the unknown. This movie was critiqued, but when it comes to look at the dollar signs, there is nothing more profitable than this genre. Although. movie is also a reminder for filmmakers to create an accurate portrayal while covering cultural and mystical matters and their practices because some stereotypes can be damaging.
