Themes and Analysis:

  1. Family and Protection

At the basis of things, The Conjuring is not a horror movie, it is also a story about family and the sacrifices that some are willing to make to defend their members. This movie teaches love through the strange and unquestionable bond the Perrons have towards each other or the Warrens’ relationship as husband and wife and how it empowers them to help people.

  1. Good vs. Evil:

A crusade against evil is displayed through the movie in reference to the constant fight between good and evil Eds and Lorraine stands for the good ED while Bathsheba is the embodiment of doom and hopelessness. These couple fought demons using their love and faith and proved that darkness does not always win.

  1. Faith and Belief:

Belief is very pertinent in the story. The Perron’s must learn to trust the Warrens and have faith in what cannot be seen in order to be rescued while the Warrens strengthen their faith which assists them in dealing with supernatural forces.

  1. The Power of the Unknown:

The movie plays on the suspense involving the darker side of mystery which includes an old farmhouse that is outside of the city, strange voices from within the dark and other factors that are beyond the comprehension of people but the unexplainable aspect regarding the haunting spooks the audience.

Cinematography and Direction:

James Wan’s direction is scintillating single handedly allowing the movie to build suspense and creating tension whilst including little visual elements that highlight the unpleasant tone of the movie. Wan does not in any manner resort to cheap tricks such as jump scares instead building fear through anticipation. Attention are focused into cameras placed in dark corners of the hallway alongside shadowy corners adding suspense into what would pop up on the screen.

The dimly lit farmhouse alongside the echoing wooden floorboards form the ideal setting as a character for the movie. A major scene includes the “hide and clap” that utilizes sound and movement for that added spine tingling jolt for the audiences while intertwined with winter glasgow nature highlighting the family’s weakness.

Sound Engineering:

When it comes to music composed for this film, Joseph Bishara delivers by using dissonant string instruments accompanied by haunting melodies in his score in a way which makes the sound design instrumental in increasing the films overall tension. Speaking of sound design, clocks ominously ticking, gently creaking doors alongside whispers creeping in, make the audience feel as though they are backed up in a corner in the haunted house. Occasionally, remaining soundless in key moments instead of being silent makes the situation even worse. Hence indulging you in every little sound that does happen.

Reviews:

IMDB Rating 7.5

When allied with startling and emotionally profound stories, James Wan received honor for increasing the haunted house films market-, without spending a large amount on C.G.I and people pouring elements. Lili Taylors remarks of an overpowering force muffled by maternal care was also brilliantly performed. Along with Washington and Farmiga’s strong chemistry.

Reason for Its Uniqueness: Conjuring takes yet another twist in the horror genre as it focuses more character driven, which means rich story telling coupled with emotional investment in the characters instead of multiple jumpscares or cheap tricks but during the course of the movie, the viewers do want to see the characters come out alive. Furthermore, as seen in the movie, the relationship between Warren and the other person provides an element of warmth to the film which balances the cold horror of the haunting. In a similar light, the film also offers a respectful homage to the real life Warrens by intertwining fiction and non fiction seamlessly making the experience more believable, further touching on their most famous case there which translates to a much broader audience and easily leaves them question everything around them from unnatural beings that lurk around them. Cultural Impact: The Conjuring univers was a box office hit grossing more than $319,000 million in earnings. It was produced as a big-budget film, with a budget of $20 million for the film. Its success then expanded the conjurol universe with sequels and spin offs such as annabelle and the nun. The definition of horror was redone by this movie as there is fitting and engaging story instead of cliche and dull elements

Conclusion:

The Conjuring is one of the most well made horror films as it does a great job of invoking solid scares with much needed emotion. By far, the most remarkable feature of the film is James Wans’s remarkable direction alongside some standout performances and the presentation of the film that leaves a distinct impression on the audience. The film is a depiction of faith, family and fear which offers something more than the conventional haunted house story, conveying an exceptional narrative about enduring darkness, struggling and surviving, and cherishing life.

The drama combined with spine chilling moments makes The Conjuring a must see for every true fan of horror along with the fact that it is based on real life events of paranormal activity.
