“The Evil Dead Rise” is a movie that was written and directed by Lee Cronin and was released in 2023. It is part of the Evil Dead franchise and serves as a sequel to the rest of the Evil Dead movies, and it adds new elements to the movie while maintaining the use of dark humor and horror.
Synopsis:
The plot of the movie revolves around two sisters, Beth and Ellie who have been estranged for a long time. When they come together in Los Angeles, on the occasion of Beth’s wedding, they end up discovering a book which is quite ominous and is residing within Ellie’s apartment building. The book is called Necronomicon Ex Mortis and it has the ability to summon Deadites which are evil creatures. Once the book goes into the hands of Quantel (an evil demon), Ellie and Beth along with Ellie’s children have to fight a gruesome battle while trying to contain the evil forces.

Release and Reception:
Originally, HBO Max had planned to release Evil Dead Rise digitally. This was supposed to happen at the South by Southwest sxsw festival on March 15, 2023. But as per plan, the American release was on April 21, 2023. It’s success can be predicted by the revenue it earned, around 147 million dollars while spending 15 to 19 million dollars on production. Critics commended the movie for revamping the franchise and including historic elements and for these reasons, it earned positive reviews.
Critical Analysis:
Both the film and the franchise is set to be popular for years to come thanks to the new setting; the apartment in Los Angeles. Evil Dead Rise pushes the envelope for claustrophobia and the sense of anxiety it gives. There are barely any ways to escape the building and having an urban location gives it a whole new look, especially in comparison to the secluded cabin setting.
What I loved the most is how the movie stays true to its gore and directions. Each movie in the series maintained that tradition, and Evil Dead Rise is no exception with its use of fake blood. The direction certainly captured the message intended and the actors, Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland certainly understood their roles well.
Getting into details, it can be noted that “Evil Dead Rise” revolves around family and the things they do for one another. The tension resulting from the fractured relationship between Beth and Ellie infuses the storyline with an added layer of complexity as the two try to fend off demons both within and without. This narrative device used in the film – a family coming together to save each other – is entirely new to the series and offers a new angle within the rigid structures of the franchise.
Conclusion
“Evil Dead Rise” is yet another reason why people are still crowing the “Evil Dead” series – the movie is perfectly done for avid fans of the series and almost every detail is well preserved while allowing for changes and innovation. The film is packed with fresh new settings, characters, and locations but provides the core guidelines of the franchise, allowing both new mebers and fans to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Furthermore the film seems to have enjoyed a commercial success alongside positive reviews suggesting that the possibility of sequels or spin offs in this horror world are too promising to not consider.
