The Kingsroad – Season 1: EP 2

“The Kingsroad” is an episode in the television series “Game of Thrones” which broadens the scope of the world Westeros. It begins from where the previous episode ended. From the Stark family’s civil war which is splitting them apart to the royal court moving south, this particular episode marks the start of vivid animation for various character arcs, hinting at more profound struggles to come.

As of this episode, Bran Stark is still in a coma after being pushed off a tower by Jaime Lannister. Catelyn Stark, his mother, is sitting beside his bed, full of sorrow and suspicion. When an intruder tries to take Bran’s life during the night, Catelyn starts to defend herself with the assistance of Summer, Bran’s direwolf. The violence proves that dying was the last option for stifling a lot of information that could be deadly if someone wanted to keep excessively mortifying secrets. It is apparent that Catelyn has made up her mind that she is heading to King’s Landing to investigate the Lannisters personally and bring their true colors to light.

With Ned Stark, he has just received his official appointment as Hand of the King and makes plans to ride south with gate Robert Baratheon and a huge entourage. As expected, his daughters travel with him, Sansa and Arya. Both of them perceive the trip quite differently. Sansa is obsessed with living a glamourous, crush fantasy where she is betrothed to prince Joffrey, where as Arya has an independent, rebellious disposition that loathes the expectations of being a lady.

There is a violent clash somewhere along the Kingsroad when Arya and Joffrey cross paths. After Joffrey abuses the Butcher’s son, Arya goes on to defend him and proceeds to attack Joffrey. This creates a dire conflict as Nymeria, Arya’s direwolf, must flee to avoid capture, thereby leading to the death of Sansa’s direwolf Lady, who is Kill Ned Stark’s commanded to be executed on the king’s orders. This scenario momenmtarily intensifies the Stark’s families anger while rendering Sansa hopeless.

Meanwhile, in Winderfell, Jon Snow is leaving for the Night’s Watch up North and says his final goodbyes to his kids. He gifts Arya a bantam sword with the name Needle, showing that they shared a genuine bond. By the time the brotherhood reached Castle Black, Jon Snow realized that the Night’s Watch was simply a jail disguised as a noble structure filled with brigands and scum, accompanied by his new acquaintance Tyrion Lannister, who was simply passing through Wall out of curiosity. Siser shares words of wisdom with each other and end up respecting one another greatly.

She feels challenged as she starts a new lifestyle among the Dothraki people, far from home across the Narrow Sea. Now that Daenerys Targaryen has been married to Khal Drogo, she begins to accept the relationship. With help from her handmaidens, Daenerys begins to assume her responsibilities as khaleesi, growing in self-esteem and learning to exert her influence within a Dothraki society.

Themes of dominion, fidelity, and self showing his or herself are examined in “The Kingsroad” while also setting crucial culture-defining character events in motion. It portrays the pain of being partitioned away from someone, the rising conflict among noble households, and the reluctant changes they each undergo. Subsequently every travel from hereon – to the Wall, to King’s Landing, and across the sea – is fraught with danger, hidden truths, and dire ramifications.
