Arguably the most loved former supervillain and his banana obsessed followers are back with the installment of the world-famous animation series in Despicable Me 4. Set to be released on July 3, 2024, the movie continues the adventure filled yet warm grossing animation series featuring Gru, adding on to his ever-growing family along with the Minions. Featuring new villains, old favorites, and returning settings, the film delivers a wonderful blend of joyous slapstick humor and emotional trauma that all age groups have come to admire.
With Despicable Me’s fourth installment, its directed by Chris Renaud and co-directed by Patrick Delage. The script is provided by renowned screen writers Mike White and Ken Daurio. All out action alongside heartwarming moments within the movie make it packed with family, redemption and identity, while still expanding on the animation’s core themes.
Plot Summary
The story begins with Gru long adjusted to life as a devoted husband, father, and an agent for the Anti-Villain League. His privileged life is seemingly going well until a specter from his past resurfaces. His old school competitor, Maxime Le Mal, breaks out of prison and sets out with a singular focus: revenge. The AVL is forced to place Gru and his family in witness protection when Maxime and his dangerously chic partner Valentina start endangering Gru’s family.
In the sleepy suburb of Mayflower, Gru, Lucy, and their daughters Margo, Edith, and Agnes are required to assume a new identity and settle into what they assume is a picture perfect suburban life. A troop of wildly unpredictable Minions and three energetic girls serve as a reminder, however, of how difficult concealing a family truly is.
Ever so determined and eccentric, Poppy Prescott proves to be another one of Gru’s challenges as a chipper teenage neighbor. Prescott is so enamored with Gru that she romanticizes his villainous life and soon spirals into a series of escapades that capture his interest. Her attempts to garner an apprenticeship become dangerously misguided when her “evil” aspirations put the whole group at risk.
At the same time, the Minions, always seeking a new adventure, become a part of a new scientific experiment that goes wrong. Several of them evolve into “Mega Minions,” which are specialized in comical yet superpowered feats. These delightful and chaotic Minions take on a key role when Gru is forced to return to his former self in order to rescue the people he cherishes.
Recurring and New Roles
Steve Carell brings back the character of Gru and leverages his extraordinary, yet always over-the-top, villainous charm to deliver a sorely missed performance. It is his voice work that sustains the film’s success, which always contains humor and heart. Kristen Wiig is back as Lucy Wilde, who portrays wife to Gru, showcasing even greater levels of adaptability and spirit as she circus juggles chaos a la witness protection with the mama bear persona.
The three daughters, Margo (voiced by Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Polan) are as uniquely endearing as ever, with their different personalities providing emotional and comedic beats throughout the film.
Pierre Coffin continues to voice the Minions and, as always, gives each scene energy, absurdity, and unrestrained joy by speaking the delightful gibberish of the Minions.
Joining the franchise now is Will Ferrell as the smoothly confident villain Maxime Le Mal and Sofía Vergara as Valentina, his fiercely loyal and stylish crime partner. Joey King joins the cast as Poppy Prescott, the over-achieving teenage neighbor who has an affinity for Gru, which causes both humor and hassle.
Capturing Themes alongside An Emotional Foundation
As is the case with all previous installments, Despicable Me 4 includes a plethora of comedic elements, but this time provides deeper thought to several issues beyond silly fun animation—such as:
- Marking One’s Identity and Evolution
Gru’s character arc still revolves around the notion that a person can truly change. Although a villain in the early series, he now lives as a husband and father trying to do good in the world. Still, as he gets dragged back into the folds of his past through the vengeance of Maxime’s vendetta, he is forced to confront the stark differences of who he was and who he is now.
- Family Togetherness
Both being biological or chosen, family remains one of the most repeated aspects of the film. From Gru fighting off danger for his daughters to the Minions selflessly risking their lives for their ‘boss,’ the movie cements the idea that those who are loyal and loving, are the real heroes.
- Mentorship and Influence
Gru’s villainous history and his relationship with Poppy are reflections of the impact he has with others. His half-hearted mentorship of Poppy becomes a profound avenue for both of them, allowing for new sides of growth that add depth beneath the cracks of humor.
- Change and Identity
The family’s relocation to a new neighborhood serves as the backdrop for the film’s exploration of change. The family’s struggle to assimilate into a new community, even when they try to dial down their eccentric personalities, mirrors the common challenge of seeking acceptance while grappling with individuality.
Animation and Visual Style
Despicable Me 4 continues its tradition of vibrant animation. The suburb is colorful and creatively rendered, with the family’s inevitable chaos in stark contrast to their pristine surroundings. This differs from the rest of the town, which is brought to life in a sheer chaotic fashion. The dynamic and inventive action scenes, especially those with the Mega Minions, capture Illumination’s unique brand of visual comedy and spectacle.
The Mega Minions themselves are a highlight. Their designs parody classic superheroes, complete with dramatic costumes and often hilariously malfunctioning powers. The film is packed with entertaining moments, including the Minions’ mischievous antics, training, and battles.
Reception and Legacy
Families and fans alike welcomed Despicable Me 4 with open arms. It did receive some mixed reviews from critics, however, who remarked that the film’s humor and emotionally resonant moments were strong, but the plot could be too familiar and overstuffed with subplots.
The franchise’s box office performance still remains robust, and is visibly backed by the franchise’s Gru; a character audiences adore for his humorous charm and non-heroic demeanor as a villain-turned-hero. Mid-tier industry expectation for The Minions also ascertained the culturally iconic joy they bring fans and critics alike.
Conclusion
For a film that does not intend to drastically reinvent the narrative, refreshingly new additions to the cast alongside stunning animation to a story introduced as rooted in growth and connection makes Despicable Me 4 a particularly joyous watch. Sure, it does not need to follow any guidelines, and succeeds in doing so with a delivery of fast-paced comedy, quirky characters, and heartfelt storytelling. Even the former villains turned heroes can draw immense joy for viewers of all ages.
It’s a film for franchise veterans and newcomers alike, where folks, both young and old, will always be reminded as to why they once adored this series. Despicable Me 4 bolsters the claim of the Minions and Gru being the cultural icons of family friendly cinema.
