Synopsis
Heart of Stone is an action-thriller film that came out in 2023 and is directed by Tom Harper, who is known for The Aeronauts and Peaky Blinders. The film is produced by Netflix and is part of their effort to kick off blockbuster spy thrillers that can compete with traditional spies movies released in cinemas. The movie is intended to start off a new franchise and together with Gadot, the star of the film, they introduce a new type of espionage universe.
Gal Gadot plays the role of Rachel Stone, an MI6 tech support who seems to live a normal life. However, she lives a double life as she is an undercover operative for an ultra-secret global peacekeeping organization known as The Charter. The Charter is a global organization governed by an advanced AI known as The Heart. The Heart can predict and manipulate global threats in real-time and provides the organization a god-like advantage over any other intelligence body.
Rachel’s mission takes a turn for the worse when a young genius hacker, Keya Dhawan, played by Alia Bhatt, breaks into the Heart, the centerpiece of the MI6 operation. Keya believes that no single person or group should control such power, and so, she tries to take it down. Little does she know, that by doing so, she is aiding much worse global adversaries with nefarious plans.
Rachel has to journey to the Italian Alps, Lisbon, Senegal, Iceland, and other locations as the plot progresses. While racing against the clock to recover the Heart, Rachel struggles with a multitude of self-inflicted dilemmas of control, the morality of peacekeeping, and the lines that define authoritarianism. At the same time, she battles with her beliefs on the control and power.
The ideas that are presented in the film range from the ethics of Artificial Intelligence, the dangers of power controlled by a few individuals, living in secrecy, and the actions that come with such a choice. As the film unfolds, Rachel deals with her past trying to decipher if fighting for the Charter is worth it if does it aligns with her beliefs.
In the last act of the movie, Rachel’s facing off against her enemies in a fierce scene that takes place in an ultra-modern fortress located in Iceland. Because the Heart’s algorithms forecasts every possible move, Rachel can’t use technology, only her human drive and a gut feeling. Eventually, she manages to reclaim the Heart and take down the villains, but there is a cost to her victory. She ends her journey reaffirming her loyalty to the Charter, but now has, a more independent and critical view.

IMDb Ratings
Heart of Stone holding the rating of 5.7 with 10 on IMDb. The movie has gotten both positive and negative reviews from the audience and the critics.
The high production value and the diverse cast presented in the movie, along with Gal Gadot’s performance was very commanding to the audience. Most of the people pointed out the action scenes, for instance, the skydiving scene and the motorcycle in Lisbon. It was also noted that the movie attempted to launch a female led spy franchise, which is a positive addition to the genre.
Critics were quick to point out that the film relies on well established spy movie tropes. Some felt the plot was too derivative, borrowing elements from Mission: Impossible, James Bond, and The Bourne Identity. The concept of a powerful AI that knows everything and is controlling everything is really appealing, but in reality, it was thought to be too shallow and overly convenient in some places.
Moreover, some audiences felt the film was slow to raise the emotional stakes, that some plot points were glossed over in favor of big-budget thrills, and that the film as a whole was inadequately paced. Regardless, there was some consensus that the film provided what viewers expected: a fun and polished action film that could improve in its sequels.
