Synopsis
We Are Your Friends is an American musical drama film released in 2015. It focuses on the American electronic dance music (EDM) scene and touches on the themes of youth, ambition, and identity. The movie is directed by Max Joseph, in his debut feature, and it stars Zac Efron as Cole Carter, a 23-year-old wannabe DJ trying to make it big in the ever-changing Los Angeles night scene.
In the film, Cole Carter is a wannabe DJ living in the San Fernando Valley with his three friends, Mason, Ollie, and Squirrel. Cole’s dreams are to become a renowned DJ, someone capable of moving the world with his music and, above all else, make a timeless classic. For his friends, nightlife, partying, and grinding to make it big—in whatever way that makes sense to them—defines their lives.
Everything changes when he runs into a former DJ, James Reed. James is a highly knowledgeable music producer, and Cole’s run into him makes him his new mentor. James guides Cole to producing an original sound in a truly Cole way. Cole learns that to make it in the industry, a DJ must do more than blast the current hottest tracks. It requires raw, unfiltered creative expression.
Cole begins to fall in love with Sophie, James’s assistant and girlfriend, which complicates the mentorship further. Their relationship tests Cole’s loyalty, ethics, and his determination to stay clear of distractions. At the same time, Cole’s friends begin to fight within the group. Mason begins to pursue shady club promotion, Ollie aims to become an actor, and Squirrel attempts to bring some rationality to the group.
Cole experiences a turning point after Squirrel dies of a drug overdose at a party. This moment shatters Cole’s illusions of the party lifestyle and results in him coming to terms with the consequences of the choices which he and his friends had made.
Cole channels his distressing experiences and insights into crafting an original track. He titles it “We Are Your Friends.” The track symbolizes his journey—raw, emotive, and true. He finally debuts it at a major music festival. As the audience embraces his newly found music, it’s clear that he has found his voice and is on his way to real artistry.
