Ask Me What You Want

Synopsis

“Ask Me What You Want” (Pídeme lo que quieras) is a 2014 film focused on romance that explores the intersection of sexuality, self-healing and personal growth. It is based on the Spanish erotic novel series written by Megan Maxwell. The novels were commercially successful, parallelled to Fifty Shades of Grey, but the cinematic adaptation aims to explore the edge of love, desire, and development which is deeply rooted in the book’s essence.

Judith Flores, the portagonist, is a motivated and self-reliant Spanish corporate worker. Like everyone else, her day-to-day life is humdrum, rotating around her career, devoid of intricate relationships. But everything gets turned upside-down when she meets the charming German businessman, Eric Zimmerman, who has come to Spain to oversee operations for his company.

There is sizzling attraction between Judith and Eric since their initial confrontation. Eric is amazed by Judith’s vivaciousness and candidness for someone of her stature, in addition to her great beauty. Contrarily, Judith is enthralled by the confidence and charm of Eric. Despite appearing relaxed and composed, Eric remains a mystery because of the secrets he cloisters, including his relationships which are dictated by controlling and dominant inclinations. As Eric tries to woo Judith, he shows her a level of erotic adventure exploration that reveals to her desires she either chose to forget, or never realized she had. What begins as a wanton and care-free encounter ultimately transforms into a more profound connection, albeit whilst navigating emotional baggage, insecurities, jealousy, and self-doubt.

Judith, reluctant at first, becomes enchanted by the entirety of the relationship’s psychological and physical allure. A confrontation with her trauma, sexist societal expectations, and feminism regarding femininity, sexuality, and the construct of marriage becomes inevitable. On the contrary, Eric is a man who prefers control and works in secrecy. He learns to appreciate emotional intimacy through Judith’s warmth and honest posture.

Just like the novels, this film does not shy away from graphic imagery. However, it still goes beyond the erotic and narrates a tale about two individuals who struggle to believe in eachother as much as they learn to have faith in themselves. Their story is riddled with conflict, resolution, and a singular perpetual dilemma: what portion of yourself will you give up for affection?

While the protagonists’ bond grows, a number of new external factors start to come into play. The tension is conflated from a myriad of sources, such as Eric’s emotionally aloof demeanor paired with his enigmatic chronicle and Judith’s burning ambition that clashes with her self-respect. Judith’s friends and family are tellingly critical of the companionship, especially when they notice Judith becoming entrenched further into Eric’s web of secrecy and control.

Not being able to open up about his past threatens to tear the couple apart. Now Judith finds herself at a precipice. She can either stay in the relationship that forces identity erasure or walk away from the man who has, in all truth, made her believe in herself. The movie culminates with the characters unmasking the true cost of being vulnerable, the honesty they waged away, the undeniable command of mutual respect permuted through creation.

Cast & Crew

Megan Montaner plays Judith Flores in the film. Emiliana’s role of Judith captures the emotional struggle of a woman who is simultaneously vulnerable and empowered, vulnerable yet fiercely strong, caught between wanting to acheive, wanting to reclaim her life, and wanting simply to survive. Her Judith is torn between desire and self-preservation.

Daniel Grao as Eric Zimmerman. He brings subtle intensity and brooding charm to his performance. Grao presents both sides of the character’s outward bravado and the inner turmoil, balancing his internal struggles. The audience sees a man haunted by deep scars from previous encounters, desperately seeking some form of intimacy.

César Hernández directed the film. With the focus on character development, Hernández shaped the story on his trademark emotional depth. In Hernandez’s direction, the erotic aspects remain vital but don’t overpower the film; instead, they serve the narrative. He approaches intimacy with restraint, depicting the intimate moments as crucial aspects of character transformation and relationship development.

The color palette evokes warmth, and the rhythm of the camera is smooth and soft, giving an elegant touch that evokes sensuality without voyeurism. Cinematography heightens the sense of emotion and mood throughout the film as well. The soundtrack enriches sultry and dramatic scenes alike with emotion, cementing a modern feel.

Awards and Recognition

The 2022 Ask Me What You Want film adaptation from the bestselling self-help book still manages to earn a spot among IMDb’s 2022 most-anticipated romance movies. However, unlike its peers, it has received mix reviews on several platforms, riding on an approximate reeling of 5.2/10 on the romance meter. As of September 2023, the film, along with its literary predecessor, continues to elicit a wide range of responses from audiences.

For some, the primitive eludes due to the bits of misogyny shown. Feminists, on the other hand, applaud the bold depiction of femininity and the magnetism of the leads. Gabriella’s character especially wowed a lot of people and is dubbed as empowering female characters in modern cinema.

On the flip side, critics point out some glaring gaps in the narrative as well as character development. Erotic driven plotlines without enough background story or originality is, arguably, the central reason why the film is deemed unworthy. Other parts of the film also face scrutiny for its pacing, especially where emotion is supposed to be brought into the mix. Parts feel rushed and unexplored which rips away the emotion attached to them.

Whatever the underlying reasoning may be, the film cultivates a cult following owing to the unending supply of romance interlaced with eroticism — something audiences appreciate most. The admirers relish in Judith’s seeming bluntness alongside her disaffection toward submissive confrontationalist roles, steering strong to the traditional norms of romantic engagements.

Conclusion

Ask Me What You Want is a bold and provocative picture that attempts to delve deeply into love, intimacy, and the self. Its erotic drama approach is complemented with the scope of a character studying the complicated relationship between love, power, and self identity.

The film succeeds in being more than a romance because of strong lead performances from Megan Montaner, along with critical themes of emotional vulnerability, sexual empowerment, and reciprocal respect. It succeeds for offering an insight into intimacy being something that makes us confront our deepest fears and opens us in ways we thought were unimaginable.

For fans of hot adult romantic dramas, Ask Me What You Want is a compelling blend of steamy sensuality and stimulating substance. It will not appeal to everyone, but those willing to confront the unabashed depiction of love and desire will be caught up in its passionate ride filled with engaging thoughts and reflections.
