Friends with Benefits

Synopsis

Friends with Benefits (2011), directed by Will Gluck, is yet another romantic comedy which attempts to both reinvent and embrace the genre’s classic tropes. The film features a familiar storyline of casual intimacy evolving into something deeper, but distinguishes itself through self-aware charm and humor, alongside warm, earnest emotion.

The movie focuses on Dylan Harper and Jamie Rellis, played by Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, respectively. They are young professionals in New York City. Dylan, an LA-based art director, is Jamie’s a fast-talking headhunter who attempts to get him to work at GQ Magazine. Their meet-cute occurs during his recruitment. She manages to land him the job, assists him in settling into the city, which fosters a new friendship that is rooted in their easygoing chemistry and mutual cynicism about love.

Both Dylan and Jamie have recently come out of frustrating relationships. Jamie was recently dumped by her boyfriend, while Dylan is still stinging from his ex-girlfriend’s critique of his emotional immaturity. They both agree that romantic entanglements are messy, expectations are exhausting, and love is often overrated. In one of their many candid conversations, they decide to try an experiment: become friends with benefits— engage in casual sex devoid of emotional or romantic expectations.

Their arrangement seems ideal initially. They retain their friendship, go out for drinks, and have sex without the burdens of maintaining a relationship. The banter between them is lighthearted and full of wit, and the film captures the awkward, tender, and comedic moments that unfold in more unorthodox pairings.

As time progresses, feelings rather than just a physical connection take center stage, which complicates matters further. While Jamie is eager to nurture the relationship, Dylan is still hesitant to come to terms with his true emotions. Things begin to fall apart during a visit to Dylan’s hometown in California where Jamie meets his eccentric family, including his father (played by Richard Jenkins), who suffers from early Alzheimer’s. The emotional vulnerability Dylan displays when he is around his family reveals a different side of him, and that deepens the bond they share, at least in Jamie’s perspective.

The turning point comes when Jamie understands the emotional unavailability from Dylan’s end, which causes internal conflict as they both grapple with feelings of commitment and honesty. Following a period of silence, the two part ways; however, they are soon to come back together. Throughout the journey of both characters, and through the embrace of their feelings, they undergo a transformative arc and ultimately reunite romantically. In a classic rom-com twist, Dylan declares his love for Jamie with a flash mob in Grand Central Station, asserting that friendship and romance need not be adversarial.

Cast & Crew

The film benefits from the undeniable chemistry between its two leads:

Justin Timberlake as Dylan Harper: Timberlake had already successfully transitioned from a pop star to an actor by this point, and he infuses the character of Dylan with boyish charm and emotional depth. Timberlake makes Dylan endearing although at times he is oblivious and clueless.

Mila Kunis as Jamie Rellis: Jamie is played by Kunis who brings energy, wit, and a blend of emotional intelligence to the role. Kunis captures both confidence and insecurities which marks dynamic range. The character goes beyond the stereotypical rom-com heroine due to Kunis’s sharp comedic timing and her expressive performance.

Patricia Clarkson plays Jamie’s mother, an eccentric and free-spirited character, providing comic relief and explaining Jamie’s romantic cynicism.

Clarkson portrayed Jamie’s alzheimer afflicted father who starkly illuminated his relationship with Jamie, counterbalancing the film’s comedy. The tender strength of Jenkins’ portrayal of a battling Alzheimer’s patient added evocative layers to the role while also deepening Dylan’s character arc.

Woody Harrelson plays Tommy, Dylan’s gay GQ workmate. His character is stock, yet he breaks stereotypes in subtle ways through his over-the-top masculinity and sharp, blunt humor.

Will Gluck, the director of the teen comedy Easy A, is credited with co-writing the film’s script together with Keith Merryman and David A. Newman. With Gluck at the helm, he intertwines humor with heart in what feels like effortless motion. The dialogue is pacy and rich in contemporary culture, passing self-aware critiques on the stereotypes of romantic comedies and relationships of today.

The film’s score captures the exuberance of youth with contributions from Kris Kross, Peter Bjorn and John, and Semisonic. The New York City setting is also harnessed to showcase the vibrancy and tumult of dating in the modern urban world.
