The Instigators

Synopsis

The Instigators is set in modern day Boston and follows two partners from different walks of life, Rory, a struggling blue collar worker, is portrayed by Matt Damon, while Casey Affleck plays Cobby, an ex convict trying to turn his life around. Both men are trapped in a never ending cycle of dead end jobs, debt, and desperation, all thanks to a system that has constantly failed them.

Their lives come together when Rory, after several failed attempts to turn his life around, decides to pull off a life changing robbery that would help him get out of his debts and improve his family’s living standards. This comes after Cobby, Rory’s old acquaintance, who may have a dark past, is more than happy to help him out as he knows the streets better than anyone else.

A sophisticated commute solving robbery, that turns out to be an over complicated nightmare. The target? A notorious private security Boston hotel, dark elites rich with power and access to a political fundraiser are held captive within. Things go awry when an accidental misfire grants Roy and Cobby a city wide chase, forcing them to frantically escape at gunpoint for their lives.

If that weren’t enough, they soon learn that in the process, they have taken sensitive information concerning a deeper conspiracy with corrupt business officials and shady dealings. They have now become both… criminals… and pawns in treacherous games that far surpass any imagined danger.

Fighting against time, Rory and Cobby try their best to deal with the violent underbelly of Boston– mercenaries attempting to take them out, the public law enforcement hunting them down, and their own growing suspicion towards one another. The multitude of brilliant secondary cast members include: the ever-fixated cunning (Hong Chau), the jaded cop who has her own share of secrets (Emily Blunt) and the chic enforcer (Michael Stuhlbarg) who has only one purpose – to get the stolen evidence back, whatever the means.

The Instigators follows these two as they attempt to navigate through the barrage of conflicts, never shying from the hardship that lies ahead. Even while battling external forces, the emotional center remains the explosion of two imperfect people depending on one another to survive as they navigate through sheer adversity. Convenience turns into reluctant partnership and blooms into earned trust fueled by shared trauma and the bitter victory of hope and redemption.

Boston’s intricate streets serve as the backdrop for the breathtaking, pulse-pounding climax of the film, which features a final showdown that is just as emotionally powerful as it is action-packed. The ending—as satisfying in catharsis as it is in consequence—will undoubtedly leave audiences reflective and exhilarated, without giving away spoilers.

Casey Affleck as Cobby:

Affleck shines in portraying a reluctant partner with a haunted past. With internal conflict and dry was, he merges them together to seamlessly anchor the film with his nuanced performance.

Blunt captures a conflicted law enforcer torn between allegiance to rules versus personal morals. More than a mere antagonist, she adds emotional gravity to the chase and deepens the stakes to make the audience care about her.

Hong Chau as Angela, the Fixer:

Chau delivers a scene-stealing performance as a merciless and menacing operator working Boston’s underbelly with poise, calculating each move she makes.

Michael Stuhlbarg as Victor Drummond:

Cinematography:

Boston is captured by Oliver Wood with gritty realism. The sharp corners of allying roads bustling with traffic narrate stories to the skyscrapers emitting light and shadows, enveloping the entire city into an invigorating character for the audience to discover. The chase becomes more heighted.

Soundtrack:

The exhilarating music for the film composed by David Buckley adds layers of intensity to the film’s fast-paced action scenes which are accompanied by heart racing energy. He tightens the grip of the score while also softening it to highlight the emotions at play, most intricately at the quiet and intimate moments when the focus dives deep into the characters.
