The Wolf and the Lion – Season 1: EP 5

The political anticipations transforming into actual combat in Game of Thrones was catalyzed by the episode, “The Wolf and the Lion.” The conflict has now directed focus onto King’s Landing and the Seven Kingdoms, where long-held alliances are on the verge of collapsing due to plotting, suspicion, and unavoidable confrontation.

In King’s Landing, Ned Stark is still pursuing the claims of Jon Arryn, King’s former Hand. He is beginning to consider the possibility that the Lannisters may know some dangerous information, potentially pertaining to the royal children. With the information Ned has gathered so far, he avoids the trail of secrets as long as possible, but eventually is confronted with the reality that Grand Maester Pycelle tells him of Arryn’s research on lineages he conducted before dying, which included the king’s offspring.

Ned’s appointment as Hand of the King is marked by a tourney set to be hosted by King Robert Baratheon. However, in stark contrast to this opinion, Ned suggests the event be canceled due to high spending and risk the event holds for the realm. The disagreement is amplified by Robert’s desire to speak on the subject of assassinating Daenerys, the pregnant Targaryen across the Narrow Sea. For Ned, the decision to sacrifice the girl who is no immediate threat does not make sense whatsoever. Ultimately, both steer toward arguing, suggesting the maneuvering point of deeper issues.

Having brought the Eyrie, Catelyn Stark takes Tyrion Lannister captive, assuming that he was behind the assassination attempt against her son Bran. She comes at the stronghold of her sister Lysa Arryn, who now governs the Vale on behalf of her young son Robin. Catelyn is shocked at Lysa’s erratic behavior and Tyrion is confined in a sky cell, a horrifying room exposed to a vertical drop.

As news of Tyrion’s capture spreads to King’s Landing, the political balance shifts dramatically. Jaime Lannister, furious about his brother’s imprisonment, attacks Ned in the street. When words escalate, Jaime and his guards assault Ned’s men, slaughtering some. Ned is injured in the leg, ending the episode with a brutal reminder that the game of thrones is more than political — it’s a warzone.

In other places, Arya Stark continues her clandestine sword training with Syrio Forel and her perception of threats surrounding her is increasing. Arya overhears a secret conversation between Varys and Illyrio which suggests that something bigger is brewing behind the curtain – involving war, betrayal, and the return of the Targaryens.

The shift from tense build-up to openly hostile maneuvering in “The Wolf and the Lion” marks a critical juncture. It underscores the worsening fractures in the Stark-Lannister dynamic and further indicates that no one, not even the King, is in firm control. As the kingdom begins its gradual decline into disorder, alliances are strained and falsehoods abound. The episode displays the boundless consequences of vengeance, pride, and an unwavering sense of honor, toppling even the most noble figures in the realm.
